In this edition of Private Passions, which was recorded earlier this year, before his recent death,
Sir Georg Solti talks to Michael Berkeley about his student days in pre-war Hungary, where his teachers included Bartok and Kodaly, his hair-raising escape from Budapest just as the Nazis moved in, and his long career since as one of the world's foremost conductors, particularly noted for his pioneering opera recordings, from Mozart and Beethoven to Wagner and Strauss.

The third of eight programmes celebrating musical personalities from the past. Astrid Varnay - from Manhattan to Valhalla
On 6 December 1941, opera-goers queueing outside New York's Met were puzzled to see an unfamiliar name on the posters for Wagner's Die Walkure. If it had not been for
Pearl Harbor, the next day's papers would have headlined one of this century's most sensational debuts. As a last-minute stand-in, the 23-year-old Astrid Varnay had made light work of one of Wagner's most taxing soprano roles. She has never looked back - until now, when she reflects on a career five decades long in which she helped to bring singing and acting up to date for postwar music lovers. With excerpts from: Wagner Die Walkure
Astrid Varnay (soprano),
Lauritz Melchior (baritone),
Metropolitan Opera Orchestra, conductor Erich Leinsdorf

A second chance to hear John
Pickard's new symphony, described as a "four-movement epic of conflict and reconciliation" in The Times after its first performance in June.
This colourful work is contrasted with Stravinsky's "black-and-white" ballet score from the twenties.

Concluding the magazine series for omnivorous readers. This week Kevin Jackson
explores one of the world's most bizarre literary movements - the OULIPO. He also discusses the origins of the movement with translator Gilbert Adair and talks to
Oulipian poet Harry Mathews. The weekly Guilt List reaches Dante, with some recommended reading for those setting off on the journey through Hell. And publisher Richard Cohen delves into the world of literary feuds. Why is literary talent so often associated with malice?

This American composer and pianist recently completed a Contemporary Music Network tour with her Anglo-American big band and members of the string ensemble Opus 20. Alan Plater introduces a recording of a concert they gave last May in Symphony Hall, Birmingham, which began with small-scale chamber works including a new commission - Wolfgang Tango. The big band took to the stage for the second half of the concert. During the interval, Carla Bley talks to Alan Plater about her very individual approach to music. Producer Derek Drescher
