Carla Bley

on BBC Radio 3

This American composer and pianist recently completed a Contemporary Music Network tour with her Anglo-American big band and members of the string ensemble Opus 20. Alan Plater introduces a recording of a concert they gave last May in Symphony Hall, Birmingham, which began with small-scale chamber works including a new commission - Wolfgang Tango. The big band took to the stage for the second half of the concert. During the interval, Carla Bley talks to Alan Plater about her very individual approach to music. Producer Derek Drescher
