Michael Berkeley's guest this week is singer Felicity Lott. Noted for her appearances in great operatic solo roles by Mozart and Strauss, she has included both composers in her list of favourite works. Her choices also include a varied range of vocal interpretations she particularly admires, from James Bowman as Handel's Julius Caesar and Alfreda Hodgson in Bach's St Matthew Passion to Jacques Brel singing his own Chanson des Vieux Amants. Repeated tomorrow 6.30pm

The second of eight programmes celebrating musical personalities from the past.
Pierre Fournier - Aristocrat of the Cello
Twenty-five years ago, a young cellist won a scholarship and lessons with a great player. Julian Lloyd Webber did not hesitate: he wanted to study with the French cellist Pierre
Fournier. This aristocrat of the instrument was also called "the slow-movement cellist", a description borne out by many of his records, though for Julian Lloyd Webber it short-changes his blend of romantic power and classical restraint in a very wide repertoire. With excerpts from:
Beethoven Cello Sonata in A, Op 69 Artur Schnabel (piano)
Brahms Double Concerto in A minor
David Oistrakh (violin), Philharmonia, conductor Alceo Galliera
Debussy, arr Heifetz Beau Soir Ernest Lush (piano)
Rimsky-Korsakov, arr Harrison Chanson Hindou (Sadko) Paris Concert Orchestra, conductor Jean-Marie Auberson
Martinu Cello Sonata
Jean Fonda (piano)
CPE Bach Cello Concerto in A, Wql72 Lucerne Festival Strings, conductor Rudolf Baumgartner
Shostakovich Cello Concerto No 1
Suisse Romande Orchestra, conductor Jascha Horenstein Discs

From the Barbican Centre, London. Giulio Cesare is one of Handel's most dramatic and compelling operas, packed with seduction, murder and suicide attempts. Although the plot is largely fictional, most of the characters are historical figures.
