Twenty-five years ago, a young cellist won a scholarship and lessons with a great player. Julian Lloyd Webber did not hesitate: he wanted to study with the French cellist Pierre
Fournier. This aristocrat of the instrument was also called "the slow-movement cellist", a description borne out by many of his records, though for Julian Lloyd Webber it short-changes his blend of romantic power and classical restraint in a very wide repertoire. With excerpts from:

From the Barbican Centre, London. Giulio Cesare is one of Handel's most dramatic and compelling operas, packed with seduction, murder and suicide attempts. Ann Murray and Amanda Roocroft head the cast as the Roman emperor Julius Caesar and Queen Cleopatra of Egypt. Handel's opera is based on Caesar's visit to Egypt in 48-47BC. Although the plot is largely fictional, most of the characters are historical figures.
