When William Faulkner became a Nobel laureate in 1949, he was both an outcast and a hero to the American Deep South. His greatest novels - The Sound and the Fury, Intruder in the Dust and Absalom,
Absalom - preyed upon the innermost values of a white society that still believed in its own supremacy. His family disowned him, yet his stance on race was ambivalent, even reactionary. In the centenary year of his birth, Diane Roberts travels to Mississippi to investigate this man of contradiction. She talks to his nephew, to the award-winning writer Fred D'Aguiar , and to Professor Henry Louis Gates about Faulkner and his literary legacy. Producer Enka Wright. See also Monday 10pm

Joe Orton's unfinished screenplay, written for the Beatles in 1967 and adapted for radio by John Retcher. Orton was found dead on the very day he was to meet director Richard Lester about the making of the film. In this first production of the play, Blur's Damon Albarn provides a musical link to the original Beatles casting. Adrift in a world run by monstrous tweed-suited women shod in thick leather brogues, three men decide to start a worldwide revolution to overthrow the matriarchy. By turns funny, moving, sexual and surreal, the play celebrates the ferocity of Orton's farce, the music of the Beatles and the Summer of Love. With Allan Mitchell, Edward Halstead, Mark Webb, John Gielgud and Joe Dowling

"If I couldn't be Rameau, there's no one I'd rather be than Mondonville," wrote Daquin after the first performance of Mondonville's Titon et I'Aurore. So successful was the premiere at the Academie Royale de Musique in January 1753 that the work was performed 35 times during the following season.
Jeremy Summerly is joined by Graham Sadler to discuss this heroic pastorale and its part in the famous dispute between advocates of French and Italian music
- the Querelles des Bouffons.
