Macbeth
I From the Royal Opera
I House, Covent Garden.
The first performance of Verdi's
Macbeth took place in Florence in 1847. Later, Verdi revised it for performances at the Theatre Lyrique in Paris, and that version is the one usually heard nowadays. This live relay provides a chance to hear Verdi's opera as it was originally intended. It is sung in Italian, and introduced by Piers Burton-Page and Michael Oliver , who has described
Macbeth as "Verdi's first copper-bottomed masterpiece".
Chorus and Orchestra of the Royal Opera House, conductor Edward Downes
Acts 1 and 2 9.20 The Three Macbeths
Verdi loved the plays of Shakespeare, but had no compunction about changing and cutting them to fit in with the demands of opera. He had two goes at Macbeth, and Tom Rosenthal unpicks the differences between tonight's 1847 version and the 1865 Paris version, comparing the two librettos and illustrating the changes that were made.
