Schumann frequently reworked his pieces, even after they had already been published. Sometimes he was dissatisfied with his first thoughts and decided to rewrite, and sometimes friends - especially his wife, Clara - made suggestions.
When Schumann was unhappy with his original idea, it was often for a good reason, and his second version can be a distinct improvement. This week, Christopher Marshall introduces some of Schumann's first thoughts.
