Harrison Birtwistle 's s newest opera, to a libretto by Russell Hoban , in Tom Cairns 's world-premiere production from
Glyndebourne. Presented by Jonathan Cross.
The opera is a love story, the lovers being Pearl, the "girl with a pearl earring" of Vermeer's famous painting, and King Kong - or rather
"the idea of Kong", because there never was a 50-foot-high gorilla in the film, just a giant head, a giant foot and an 18-inch articulated model. And, owing to an administrative error, the idea of him is lost in the World of Shadows.
Can these two unlikely lovers connect across time, space and the customs barrier between death and life?
