'Catching a train from Penge

In this final programme John Fordham reaches 1935 the year usually regarded as heralding the swing age, when Benny Goodman first made an impact on the American public. Goodman became the most successful band leader commercially, but Duke Ellington, Jimmie Lunceford and Benny Carter were the most innovative and their influence is still apparent today.

by Maurice Maeterlinck, translated by Timberlake Wertenbaker
With Gary Cady as Pelleas
Janet Maw as Melisande
Jack Klaff as Golaud
and Maurice Denham as Arkel

First produced in Paris in 1893 "Pelleas and Melisande" is one of the major works of symbolist drama. Destiny brings Prince Golaud and the mysterious young Melisande together by a fountain in the forest, and fate decrees that she and his half-brother, PelIeas, are inexorably drawn together in a relationship which can only end in tragedy.
