The Birth of the Big Band

on BBC Radio 3

In this final programme John Fordham reaches 1935 the year usually regarded as heralding the swing age, when Benny Goodman first made an impact on the American public. Goodman became the most successful band leader commercially, but Duke Ellington, Jimmie Lunceford and Benny Carter were the most innovative and their influence is still apparent today.
