In the 1920s American Negroes started to examine, and then to parade, their origins. This self-awarerless was most marked in Harlem, which became a sort of novelty culture-park for white visitors. Today the exotic night life and free atmosphere have disappeared; Harlem Is a festering redoubt of dereliction and street crime. Russell Davies reflects on the culture, politics and changing fortunes of Harlem. Contributors Include RALPH ELLISON. JAMES BALDWIN. AMIRI BARAKA, RUTH ELLINGTON and JOHN HAMMOND.
