Sixty years after the first woman mp took her seat at Westminster, Margaret Thatcher became Britain's first woman Prime Minister. Yet at the same election only 19 women out of a total of 635 mps were returned to Parliament, the smallest number since 1951. David Marquand , Professor of Contemporary History and Politics at the University of Salford, reflects on the practical considerations that deter women from the national forum, and suggests that the real reasons lie at a deeper level.
