Any pharmacy holds a multitude of synthetic drugs designed to transform human behaviour. There 'are drugs to make you laugh, to make you cry, to wake you up, to Put you to sleep. How do they work? What is there in the brain that makes it receptive to chemical stimulation? John Maddox examines the neurochemists' act of faith: that the brain's function relies on chemical messengers, and that psychologically active drugs somehow interfere with this mechanism.
