Compiled and presented by Martin Esslin with Stephen Moore as Reiner Kunze and Kenneth Shanley as the Storyteller
In 1977 the East German poet Reiner Kunze and his family were granted permission to leave East Germany. Kunze, a prominent poet, had been expelled from the GDR'S Writers' Union on the grounds that he had vilified his country in a short book called The Lovely Years. In this programme MARTIN ESSLIN presents extracts from the offending book and considers the reasons for the offence.
