On 28 October 1726 a London printer published the first volume of Travels into Several Remote Nations of the World by Lemuel Gulliver , ' first a surgeon and then a captain of Several ships But some readers already knew that the true author was Jonathan Swift , Dean of St Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin.
Denis Donoghue, Professor of Modern English and American Literature in University College,
Dublin, suggests that Gulliver remains one of : the most memorable characters in fiction for the very reason that Swift has given him no character at all.
