at the Court of the Emperor Maximilian I
In 1506 Maximilian nominated his thrice-widowed daughter, Margaret of Austria, as Regent of the Netherlands, and for the next 24 years her palace at Malines was one of the great artistic centres of Northern Europe. A special bond seems to have existed between Maximilian and Margaret, as their voluminous correspondence shows. Margaret wrote many poems that were set to music by the composers in her employ. Nikolai Erdman was one of the youngest Russian talents of the 1920s and deeply admired by Maxim Gorky. The Mandate was the first of two fierce comedy satires. His second. The Suicide, was banned in Russia in the 1930s and has never been performed there.
