by Hugh MacDiarmid through Henry Stamper
' These are a few recollections from the time I became known not only as Chris Grieve but Hugh MacDiarmid. These thoughts move back and forward from 1923 to the present year of 1939 as they come to mind. They are. in short, the passing thoughts of a hippopotamus. The hippopotamus is a large beast and that explains why I should have difficulty in getting it all on a certain size of canvas and even then. cannot present them in the round but only from one angle at a time and far from life size.' Translated from the Icelandic by BENEDICT ARNASON and PHILIP BOND with Philip Bond , Lyndon Brook and Barbara Leigh-Hunt Mrs Arnason would have been a complete angel if she'd had wings and it's hard to see why Mr Arnason did such a dreadful thing to her. If their son could only understand what happened between them he could perhaps understand himself.
