In 1781 Idomcneo was produced in Munich and later that year Mozart finally left the service of the Cardinal-Archbishop of Salzburg. As in Mannheim and Paris a crisis was accompanied by the composition of violin sonatas.

Hans Keller writes: ' Surrounding what I think are Mozart's only two good early quartets are inspired arrangements of two of his mature master-pieces. K 406 is. of course, known - though not known enough: the A major String Quintet is, I suggest, Mozart s own too. In places, these arrangements can be heard to have musical advantages over their originals.'
