The Frankfurt Group
In the 1890s four young Englishmen and an Australian went to study composition in Frankfurt with Iwan Knorr who was then considered to be one of the best teachers of composition in Europe. They were Roger Quilter and Balfour Gardiner, who were born 100 years ago in November, Norman O'Neill , Cyril Scott and Percy Grainger. Although Knorr was German, his sympathies lay with Russian and French music and he had a considerable liberating effect on his students; their subsequent careers could hardly have been more diverse.
