HECTOR BERLIOZ b 1803, d 1869
The leading figure of the French Romantic movement, a master of orchestration who used vast forces to emotional and original effect. Literary subjects absorbed him and Shakespeare was his great passion. He wrote in Lelio: ' Shakespeare! Shakespeare! Thou whose first years of work were hardly noticed at the time, whose history is almost as unknown, as mysterious as that of Ossian and of Homer. What golden footsteps hath thy genius left behind! '
The week's programmes examine how Berlioz retrod those footsteps.
