Richard Mayne examines A History of the Cinema - from its Origins to 1970, ERIC RHODE'S ambitious study of the movies in relation to the societies from which they emerged, which is to be published tomorrow.

The first of 13 programmes examining the relationship of Tchaikovsky as man and musician to other leading composers in the Russia he knew. The Russian Orthodox Church provided the only long-standing musical tradition in Russia and this first programme illustrates Tchaikovsky's response to that heritage. Father Michael Fortounatto takes us through the Sunday liturgy and the BBC SINGERS, conducted by KERRY WOODWARD , perform the musical sections, in settings by Tchaikovsky, Kalinnikov. Tschesnokov, Kompaneisky and Ipolitov-Ivanov.

Is hay fever inherited? The tendency to develop certain diseases in adult life, for example fusion of bones in the spine (ankylosing spondylitis), multiple sclerosis, and some rare forms of cancer, can be detected before the disease shows itself, by identifying specific genes which are linked to the immune response system of the body. Geneticist PROFESSOR WALTER BODMER, from the University of Oxford, describes how research in this area may lead to a better understanding of the cause and nature of these diseases; and rheumatologist DR DEREK BREWERTON , from Westminster Hospital, London, outlines its clinical significance.
