Elizabeth Jane Howard , novelist, makes a personal choice of records that trace her musical impressions from childhood. She includes two songs composed by her grandfather Arthur Somervell and recalls how Tchaikovsky's ' Pathérique ' once made her burst into tears. She finds that the most enduring music is by Mozart, Bach, and his son Carl Philipp Emanuel, and above all Searkatti - Like the best poetry he gives one the chance to understand and accept more about life.'

1 The first three fellow-fresh-men to whom I spoke when I went up to Cambridge in October 1950 are now Professors. Proust saw his friends, in old age. disguised with white hair: I see mine, in their mid-40s, prudent upon their pedestals, just as young as they were, only older. Can this be maturity? '
