Sir Monty Finniston , Chairman of the British Steel Corporation, takes a scientific approach to his choice of records: ' It's a bad scientist who's not prepared to listen and who is not prepared to modify his attitudes after he has listened.' In Mozart he sees the ' technical excellence of the young,' in chamber music by Saint-Saens ' a small group of people working together in close harmony,' and in Beethoven's Emperor Concerto ' professionalism under the most difficult circumstances.'

Winton Dean points to some interesting echoes of Donizetti in Verdi's operas. There are numerous stylistic parallels of a superficial nature but significant correspondences, where Verdi echoes Donizetti on a deeper level, begin in Macbeth and continue as late as La lorza del destino.
