Music of Tchaikovsky's Russia

The first of 13 programmes examining the relationship of Tchaikovsky as man and musician to other leading composers in the Russia he knew. The Russian Orthodox Church provided the only long-standing musical tradition in Russia and this first programme illustrates Tchaikovsky's response to that heritage. Father Michael Fortounatto takes us through the Sunday liturgy and the BBC SINGERS, conducted by KERRY WOODWARD , perform the musical sections, in settings by Tchaikovsky, Kalinnikov. Tschesnokov, Kompaneisky and Ipolitov-Ivanov.
