John Redwood , Fellow of All Souls College, Oxford, argues that Christianity in England in the late 17th and 18th centuries was less deep-seated than is sometimes supposed, and that the clerical attempt to revitalise Christianity was itself to help pave the way towards the Darwinian assault on religion in the 19th century.
