What part should fundamental scientific research play in the life of a developing country? Scientists from the Tata Institute in India discuss their work and its effects on Indian science. Is it less difficult to write a good, objective history of science when the major figures are still alive? Dr Robert Olby of the University of Leeds has recently written The Path to the Double Helix, a detailed account of the elucidation of the structure of DNA by Crick and Watson, and he talks about the use he made of the participants' memories of the events.
