2: The Ice-Skater
Tonight PHILIP HOBSBAUM discusses a critic whose work he sees as a pattern of missed opportunities - Samuel Taylor Coleridge. With Coleridge, he believes, self-absorption went hand-in-hand with self-analysis, and he sees the image of an ice-skater, eyes fixed on his own shadow mirrored in the frozen water, as central to an understanding of Coleridge's strengths and weaknesses. (Friday, 8.40 pm: Arnold)
Part 2
The second of two lectures by GRIFFITH EDWARDS Of the Addiction Research Unit at the Institute of Psychiatry The Social Package
What are the sources of opinion towards drug use in our society? Has medical authority been given too much weight? Is too much dependence placed on legal enforcement? If social accountancy were applied to our treatment of the drug problem, Dr Edwards argues, the balance sheet would show losses as well as gains resulting from the measures we adopt to control mind-acting substances.
