2: The Ice-Skater
Tonight PHILIP HOBSBAUM discusses a critic whose work he sees as a pattern of missed opportunities - Samuel Taylor Coleridge. With Coleridge, he believes, self-absorption went hand-in-hand with self-analysis, and he sees the image of an ice-skater, eyes fixed on his own shadow mirrored in the frozen water, as central to an understanding of Coleridge's strengths and weaknesses.
