Drugs and the Social Package

on BBC Radio 3

The second of two lectures by GRIFFITH EDWARDS Of the Addiction Research Unit at the Institute of Psychiatry The Social Package
What are the sources of opinion towards drug use in our society? Has medical authority been given too much weight? Is too much dependence placed on legal enforcement? If social accountancy were applied to our treatment of the drug problem, Dr Edwards argues, the balance sheet would show losses as well as gains resulting from the measures we adopt to control mind-acting substances. (A radio version of the Edwin Stevens Lecture for the Laity given at the Royal Society of Medicine in June 1971)
