An English shire under the sky A microcosm in the mind's eye EDWARD BOADEN THOMAS finds himself, in his retirement from a lifetime in industry, impelled to write a long poem, which he describes as ' a landscape with figures.' He sees the regions of Derbyshire and characters from its history, such as Thomas Hobbes and the first Duke of Devonshire, as symbols of different facets of human experience
