Platte was commissioned in 1745 for the marriage of the Dauphin and performed with great success both at Versailles and four years later at the Paris Opéra. Even Rameau's chief detractor, the philosopher Rousseau, was enthusiastic - and no wonder, since PlatCe shows the stately master of tragédie-lyrique for once indulging in a splendid rococo romp. The heroine, if she can be so called, is a Boeotian nymph (the Boeotians were a by-word for stupidity in ancient times) whose extreme ugliness does not prevent her from believing that every man she meets falls passionately in love with her.
