Daniel Defoe died 250 years ago. His best-known book,
Robinson Crusoe , was published in 1719. Its ' homely plain style ' and racy narrative made the book an immediate success and other novels followed.
But Defoe's novels were written only in old age after a varied life as a soldier, businessman, spy and satirical pamphleteer. Frank Delaney examines his literary career with Pat Rogers and Juliet Mitchell.
