The 1930s started with the Slump, ended with the War and saw the growth of mass communications.
John Jacob examines the 30s, as they appear in an ambitious exhibition at the Hayward Gallery, London. Fierce artistic arguments are represented by surrealism and abstraction contrasted with ' Pictures of the Year from the Royal Academy.
There are designs for town halls and semis, factories and Odeons as well as a glass bathroom and the ' minimum flat. Pylons inspired poets and people danced to the Big Band sound on the wireless. The look of the times is evoked by Dinky toys; Epstein's Genesis; a prototype Whittle jet engine; the swing doors from the Strand Palace Hotel and a bomb shelter. Producer
