Myriad life forms that have rarely been seen are on offer in a special daylong broadcast following three submersibles as they dive to the depths of the ocean. Peter Snow introduces the day's events, helped by cameraman Mike de Gruy, as a 2,000m dive begins beneath their base on a research ship in Monterey Bay, California. Kate Humble, meanwhile, jumps in at the deep end of the Caribbean and Alastair Fothergill plummets towards the mid-Atlantic ridge.

"Coronation Street" actress Anne Kirkbride travels by barge along the Huddersfield canal for a rendezvous with Terry Waite and the musical Marshall family. The Huddersfield Choral Society, Colne Valley Male Voice Choir, Yew Tree Singers and local brass bands provide the music, while hymns include "O Worship the King" and "Breathe on Me, Breath of God".

The deep-sea dive, which began at 2.55pm, reaches its climax as an unmanned submersible descends into an underwater canyon 2,000m beneath the waves of Monterey Bay. Meanwhile, the yellow submarine with Kate Humble aboard is used to lure a deep-water shark in the Caribbean, and the tiny protective bubble containing Alastair Fothergill bobs around a massive black smoker (hydrothermal vent) at the bottom of the Atlantic.
