Watching the Box
10.15pm BBC1
Television has become a pervasive and dominant influence on our lives. But just what do we think of it? This celebration of 60 years of television turns the cameras on the viewers to find out whether we consider it a magic box, a time-waster or the drug of the 20th century.
Most of those interviewed talk reverentially of the arrival of the box in their home and describe watching programmes such as the Queen's coronation, Muffin the Mule, Quatermass, DrKildare and Double Your Money. However, it also shows how divisive it can be for families, with children squabbling over what to watch. Sadly, one 16-year-old fails to complete her interview because she's so distracted by the TV.
