Kate Saunders, from Cambridge University's Air Squadron, was spending a training week at RAF Wittering. In a bizarre accident, a seagull smashed through the windscreen of the Harrier jump jet in which she was flying. Pilot Ashley Stevenson ejected, but Kate Saunders was left hurtling downwards at more than 400mph in the crippled Harrier before hitting the ground. She was dragged from the fireball that followed in a heroic rescue by Stevenson, and, undeterred, has now joined the RAF and hopes to become a pilot.
This is one of the amazing stories of courage that feature in this evening's programme, an action-filled compilation of rescue tales chosen from throughout the series. It also includes an extraordinary video taken by Ron Treptow's girlfriend of his attempt to shoot the rapids at Great Langdale Beck in the Lake District.
Although an experienced canoeist, Ron got his canoe stuck in the rocks. Trapped inside his canoe with freezing white water breaking over him for 90 minutes, it was an ordeal that almost ended his life.
There will also be practical tips on how you should treat burns and scalds, and advice on how to stay safe in the water this summer.
