One of Britain's most popular and spectacular occasions, this celebration of the monarch's official birthday has been held since the mid-1700s. Tens of thousands of people attend the actual event and millions more watch on television.

This morning, 17 cameras will capture all the pomp and ceremony as the Second Battalion Grenadier Guards, formed in 1656, troop their Queen's Colour for the last time before going into "suspended animation" as a result of Government defence cuts. Julian Tutt describes the scene as Her Majesty the Queen - accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh, the Prince of Wales, the Duke of Kent and the Grand Duke of Luxembourg - takes the salute.

But it is not simply a colourful pageant. Many people do not realise that the guardsmen who take part in today's ceremony are all trained soldiers and many have been on tours of duty in hot spots such as Bosnia and Northern Ireland.

In the first series of Noel's House Party, some celebrity guests were set up for a Gotcha in which they believed they were taking part in an energetic game show. Setting off against two other teams they battled away for a couple of hours before returning to find their competitors idly drinking tea.

But the whole fiasco had entertained them so much that the idea for a new series was born. Team captains Jonathan Coleman, Annabel Giles and John Leslie lead their members in a manic three-stage race, armed with a car, a map, a cellphone and £30 cash.

Tonight's first programme features Kriss Akabusi, Gary Davies, Sandra Dickinson, Liz Kershaw, Eric Knowles, Linda Lusardi and, as in every programme, three unsuspecting members of the public who have been set up by friends.

With the World Cup looming, this drama is about two men who share a passion for football and, less happily, for the same woman.
1970: cheesecloth and flares are all the rage, the World Cup is on TV, and Harold Wilson is set to lose the General Election.
Marco, a wealthy young Italian, has come to England to discover his true identity. Carl, a student on vacation, is torn between watching the football on his parents' new colour television, canvassing for the Labour Party or going on a walking holiday with his girlfriend Ellie.
Their paths cross in Preston Library where Ellie hears Marco's story and decides to help him in his quest. To a soundtrack of songs by the Kinks, Mungo Jerry and the Beatles, Fair Game follows this unlikely trio through the trials of love, lust and loss as they undertake their epic journey across the Pennines.
