On the barren Skeleton Coast of Namibia, littered with the ghost towns left by diamond prospectors, one of Africa's most elusive animals scratches a living - the brown hyena or strandwolf.

Zoologist and film-maker Richard Goss studied the hyenas near the fishing village of Luderitz for a year, and six years later returned to the region to make this film. He and cameraman Kim Wolhuter made use of a special system for filming the animals at night developed for their previous film on the spotted hyena.

Tracking the animals across rocky terrain and cliff tops was dangerous, and at one point Wolhuter came close to drowning when washed into the sea by a 30-foot wave. He suffered concussion, broken bones and a dislocated shoulder. The reward was a unique and dramatic study of an unusual hunting animal.

"Although winning the Palme d'Or at Cannes is unlikely to create the box-office buzz that winning an Oscar does, it Is a pointer to the serious content of the film, and probably denotes critical success more than commercial success," says Barry Norman as Film 94 ends the current series by taking off to the south of France to report on this year's festival.
He adds that with less
American domination of the festival there will hopefully be a little more emphasis on the movies rather than on the razzmatazz that surrounds the appearance of the stars. Among the films that are guaranteed to cause a stir are
Quentin Tarantino 's Pulp Fiction, the British entry, The Browning
Version, directed by Mike Figgis , and the festival's opening film Hudsucker Proxy by former Paime d'Or winners Joel and Ethan Coen.
