It's not just film stars and American millionaires who have them: pre-marital contracts are legally binding in most western countries and increasingly used as a way of ensuring against acrimonious or lengthy divorce. In Britain more than one in three marriages fail, yet these contracts are generally regarded with suspicion, as having little to do with love and romance. Is a pre-marriage contract a safety net in case of trouble, or is it something which takes the trust out of a relationship from the start?
