by Dorothy Smith
with Mark Curry

Charles Dickens, one of the world's most famous writers, always remembered the 'very queer, small boy' he once had been. Mark goes to his house in London and his birthplace in Portsmouth, on the trail of the boy whose tragic childhood inspired him to write stories which would hold the nation spellbound. But the shadow of his early life that gave him his inspiration also denied him true happiness.

A Place of Consequence The 1987 America's Cup competition moves to its climax as the USA and New
Zealand battle for the right to challenge Australia. DENNIS CONNER in Stars and Stripes or CHRIS DICKSON in KZ 7 will go forward to the final races. Back in 1832 Captain
Fremantle, RN, hoped that, one day, his settlement might become 'a place of consequence'. Today
Fremantle is the scene of the biggest conflict in yachting history. Ian Wooldridge discovers that all the traditional values have been preserved: avarice, acrimony and chicanery.
It is a story of designers, skippers and crew-men giving their all for a chance of victory; it is a story of bankers, tycoons and assorted multinationals determined to get their hands on the Cup for reasons which don't have that much to do with sport.
