Pat Kerr , a British Airways stewardess, has become the figurehead of a rescue campaign for 450 destitute children in Bangladesh.
Five years ago she started to help out in the Families for Children orphanage in a Dhaka backstreet rather than spend her three-day 'lay-over' beside the hotel swimming pool with the rest of the flight crew.
Her example inspired the staff of the British Airways
TriStar fleet and now dozens of them dig drains, repair crumbling walls, disinfect feeding bottles, cuddle babies and work as helpers in the orphanage. It's a far cry from the 'superman' and 'supergirl' images of British Airways commercials; certainly a more down-to-earth - perhaps more worthwhile? - image. But the orphanage is under threat, the children threatened with eviction. The airline staff are fighting for funds and to find a way to build a new home. Can they make it before the deadline?
