Victims and villains, leaders and led, the extraordinary and the ordinary. A series of filmed documentaries about the way people live now.
Britain now has more heroin addicts than ever before. And behind every addict there is the pusher, living off the desperation of others. The pushers work from pubs, tower blocks, and back streets, and they are the major target for the police efforts to curb Britain's growing heroin problem. John is one of them:
"I was selling an ounce a day quite easily. The profits from that are quite enormous. It worked out around £4,000 to £5,000 a week ... I must have smoked that much as well."
This Real Lives film takes us into the nightmare world of the drugs business on Merseyside, 'Smack City', as the Drugs Squad try to crack down on the dozens of pushers working in the area. It gives a unique inside view of the fight against the pushers: secret meetings with informers, clandestine surveillance, and the daily round of busts. The climax is a major operation - the raid on a big pusher who tries to eat the evidence as eight police officers pile into his house....
