The 113th Championship The Old Course at St Andrews, the very home of golf, is where the most successful golfer ever will try to create history. Jack Nicklaus has won two of his three Open Championships here, where the game has its origins and a record-making third victory over this unique links course would thrill the vast crowd almost as much as a home victory for Nick Faldo. The immortal Bobby Jones once said: "If I had ever been set down in any one place and told I was to play there and nowhere else for the rest of my life, I should have chosen The Old Course". The Swilken Burn, The Beardies, Coffins and Hell Bunker are some of the terrifying obstacles that lie in front of a field which includes 13 past champions. Tom Watson seeks a hat trick of wins, Ben Crenshaw, the Masters title holder, looking for his first Open title and Fuzzy Zoeller, the US Open Champion, are there and so is the brilliant Severiano Ballesteros.
Harry Carpenter introduces live coverage of the first round.

The Earthquake Connection
A hundred million years ago the land mass around what was to become the British Isles was stretched and racked by massive earthquakes. Scientists believe they can trace the same process going on right now in the Aegean. Linking the two, they've found an intriguing connection between the creation of Greek islands, why the church where St Paul preached 2,000 years ago is now six feet under water - and the real size of Britain's oil reserves.
Predicting earthquakes is still a difficult task-but the study of them has led to an intriguing connection between Greek islands, sunken cities - and North Sea oil.
