from Dunoon
In Victorian times Dunoon was the holiday retreat for the wealthy merchants of Glasgow, who would travel the 28 miles down the Clyde by steamer. Today the town is known as the ' Gateway to the Western Highlands' and every year welcomes thousands of visitors who come to fish, to sail on the Lochs and to explore the spectacular scenery of the Cowal Peninsula.
John Stuart Roberts has joined the holidaymakers and in tonight's programme meets some of the local people, including Francis Frankum , who was rescued from the torpedoed liner, Lusitania, in 1915. He also talks to Tom and Barabel McKay , whose four teenage children decided to be baptised together in the Firth of Clyde near their home at Innellan. They join Christians from many churches in the area to sing their favourite hymns in Old and St Cuthbert 's Church, Dunoon.
