A series of four programmes with John Craven
1: The Shepherd's Son
Breakthrough tells the stories of the great 19th-century civil engineers; Telford, the Stephensons, the Brunels and Ferdinand de Lesseps. They were the brilliant pioneers who invented the first railways, designed new steam-ships, built safe roads, planned huge ship canals and completely changed the world we live in. In today's film JOHN CRAVEN travels in a working tug along the Caledonian Canal, Britain's first ship canal, to tell the story of how it came to be built and how young Tom Telford , the son of a Scottish shepherd, left his home to seek his fame and fortune in London and became the greatest engineer of his day.

The ten-part story of Britain's royal builders and collectors. Told by Huw Wheldon 9: Edward VII and the House of Windsor
This programme, which originally ended the series, has now been substantially altered in order to take fuller account of developments during the first half of this century.
SIR HUW WHELDON traces the story of Sandringham, bought as a country retreat for Edward VII when Prince of Wales, which has remained a favourite royal home. Visitors can now see the vintage cars including ' A7 ', the first car owned by a member of the Royal Family. George V opened up Holyroodhouse for state visits to Edinburgh, and it was for Queen Mary that the delectable ' Queen's Dolls House ' was made. There is also a new sequence at Royal Lodge, Windsor Great Park. where King George VI lived with his family and which is still one of the homes of Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother.
