JACK NICKLAUS defends the title he won for the third time at St Andrews last year against the strongest ever entry list. It includes TOM WATSON , the 1975 and 1977 champion; FUZZY ZOELLER, the 1978 US Masters Champion; HALE IRWIN , the 1979 US Open Champion and BEN CRENSHAW, last year's runner-up. A strong Japanese challenge includes ISAO AOKI who was leading the field at one time last year; GRAHAM MARSH and GREG NORMAN lead the Australian entry; from South Africa GARY PLAYER, the 1974 Champion; and SEVERIANO BALLESTEROS of Spain, and all the leading British golfers.
