'... they're positively geriatric.'
That was the criticism levelled by customers at the shoes made by the old-established family firm, C. & J. Clark. Five years ago Britain's shoe manufacturers were reeling under the onslaught from overseas and from the economic recession. Four hundred firms closed down, and Clarks found itself particularly vulnerable in a market which appeared to be moving away from ' sensible' shoes and traditional products.
Judith Hann and Andrew Neil follow the company's fight back, building itself a completely new look for those geriatric shoes and for the company itself. A new emphasis on design and experimental shoe-making techniques helped Clarks win its way into new corners of the market, but put at risk the company's special relationship with the loyal small shop owners, and they created a set of unexpected and unwanted problems for the men and women who make the shoes.
The Risk Business has recorded a year in the life of one of the most ambitious new design projects, and reports that traditions die very hard in the shoe industry.
