Before the Flood
On 31 January 1953 the east coast of Britain was flooded by a tidal surge which swept down the North Sea. Three hundred people died. That night, a greater disaster-the inundation of the capital, paralysing the city and putting a million lives at risk-was escaped by a mere three inches. But the risk of another flood surge is growing .year by year. London is living on borrowed time.
Nick Clarke and Michael Rodd report on the problems that have beset the Thames Barrier ever since work finally began on it four years ago; and on the desperate attempts to speed up the job in case the river wins the race against time.
The Risk Business looks at the issues facing the British construction industry, and the men who work in it. They are tough and volatile, and demand a high reward for a job that most of us wouldn't tackle at any price.
