The first month of the Second World War when the allied armies faced the Germans along the Maginot Line became known as the phoney war. But there was nothing phoney about the war waged by a handful of Royal Navy officers and scientists against the first of Hitler's secret weapons - a weapon which nearly struck a mortal blow against Britain at the point where she was most vulnerable: her sea-borne trade.
As ship after ship blew up, it began to look as though the weapon was a new type of mine, but before suitable protection against it could be devised it was necessary to know precisely how it worked. An intact specimen had to be recovered at any cost. Narrator
