Introduced by Cliff Michelmore
When an area succeeds in attracting holidaymakers, it runs the risk of destroying the atmosphere and ' character' on which that attraction was based. This week the Holiday programme looks at two destinations which are coping with exactly that problem.
Joan Bakewell reports from the Canary Islands, for years a winter sunshine destination favoured by the holiday trade. Now the Canaries have opened up to greater numbers and a wider range of winter sun-seekers.
The Lake District has never been a secret destination. Every summer the region is invaded by millions of holidaymakers and every summer it becomes more difficult to 'get away from it all'. John Carter investigates one scheme that enables visitors to escape' crowds and at the same time relieves some of the traffic congestion.
Travel experts in the studio add their own information to the film reports. And Norma Shepherd occupies our consumer advice desk.
