Behind the fighting forces in World War II a secret war was being fought by scientists and engineers.
This series of six programmes traces the moves and counter moves between British and German scientists on land, sea and in the air.
A crumpled piece of paper recovered early in 1940 from a crashed German bomber had written on it a list of navigational aids: light and radio beacons; it also included a codename 'Knickebein' - 'The Crooked Leg' - a name unknown to British air intelligence. The unravelling of the secrets of Knickebein by British scientists led to the Battle of the Beams and the first moves in electronic warfare.
